New Economies: Moving from the Margins to the Mainstream was a day of economic thinking and practice in Rotterdam, hosted by Partners for a New Economy (P4NE). Bringing together 180 thinkers, change-makers, funders, and organizations, the event explored how to redesign economies to better serve both people and the planet.

Founded in 2015 by MAVA, Oak, Marisla, and KR Foundations, P4NE is an international philanthropic fund addressing the root causes of environmental degradation within our economic system. The event’s goal was to strengthen connections across diverse movements, geographies, and disciplines, fostering the exchange of ideas and inspiring progress toward a fairer, more sustainable economy.

The challenge
With a mission centred on interconnectedness, the event needed a visual identity that reflected the fluid, evolving nature of new economic thinking—something adaptable, dynamic, and representative of the many voices shaping this movement.

The solution
The design approach captures this interplay of ideas through layered type and imagery, arranged in flexible, organic formations that symbolise the cross-pollination of perspectives.

At the core of the system is P4NE’s Nautilus icon, which is deconstructed into image frames that hold abstract visuals representing nature and people—a nod to the elements shaping new economic paradigms. This modular framework serves as a visual metaphor for P4NE’s role as a facilitator of new connections.

The graphic system is highly versatile, allowing for each touchpoint—from print materials to animated digital content—to feel distinct yet cohesive. The unrefined, straightforward style reflects what drives the most impactful ideas: clarity, adaptability, and simplicity.

The impact
By embracing a flexible, interconnected visual identity, the event reinforced its mission: to shift bold economic thinking from the margins to the mainstream—inspiring new ways to create economies where nature and people thrive together.
